NORMAL FESTIVAL 2010 – Challenged by art
This year for the fifth time... Conquering public spaces

For the fifth year the Normal Festival will be dedicated to the life stories and artistic work of people who are slower at some things, who have more difficulty orienting themselves in the surrounding world and who probably did not excel in school.

Despite these disadvantages, people with learning disabilities are part of the public space and the ways in which they assert this right are entertaining, inspirational and sometimes thought-provoking. We have therefore decided to compose the Normal Festival 2010’s programme of films, theatrical performances, exhibitions and other cultural events which can be summarised with the motto “Conquering Public Spaces”.

Although the festival’s website still has last year’s design, the team is working hard on filling in all of the programme schedule’s cells with the best that has been created over the past five years in the world of art by people, about people and for people with learning disabilities.

The Prague portion of the festival will take place between 17 and 20 November 2010 in the Aero and Světozor cinemas, the experimental venue Roxy/NoD and other locations . Film fans will again be offered quality feature films, animations and documentaries, and the festival will culminate with the screening of a documentary filmed during the political campaign preceding the 2010 parliamentary elections by students of the Inventura film workshop under the supervision of documentary filmmaker Linda Jablonská. Parts of the film were published online under the name Dokumentality and in the period before the elections the website www.inventura.org received record numbers of visitors.

The artistic portion of the festival will culminate in art brut exhibitions by Josef Hofer and Justyna Matysiak held at the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Polish Institute in Prague. Especially in the case of Josef Hofer you will have a unique opportunity to see an author in the Czech Republic who has received many prestigious awards for his drawings of male nudes which are not marked by any established artistic techniques.

As always, the festival programme will include theatre performances, concerts and workshops as well. The festival will also visit Plzeň, Hradec Králové and Brno; we will announce exact dates soon.

We will regularly update the festival’s website and are looking forward to seeing you in November!
